The Amherstburg Admirals led from start to finish in a 5-3 victory over the Blenheim Blades on Saturday night in Amherstburg.
Having not played on home ice for two weeks, the Admirals came out flying under new head coach Zack Gervais. Wyatt Goudie and Brett Jones scored two minutes apart in the first period, until the Blades scored late in the frame to put the score at 2-1 through 20 minutes of play. Rory Sandison scored the lone goal of the second period to restore the Admirals two-goal lead and set the stage for an exciting third.
At 5:50 of the third period, Drew Booker scored the Admirals first shorthanded goal of the season on a nifty wraparound. The goal proved to be a vital one as Blenheim would score consecutive goals to cut the lead to one with four minutes remaining in regulation. They would have a couple good chances in the final two minutes, but could not get another one past goaltender Russell Vaughan until Finn Russett salted it away with an empty-netter.
Vaughan made 23 stops for his fifth win of the season, as the Admirals outshot the Blades 40-26 overall for the game. Brett Jones and Drew Booker each had a goal and two assists, with both scoing highlight-reel goals.
The win kept the Admirals ahead of the Blades for fifth-place in the Stobbs division standings, and moved them within three points of Wheatey for fourth. They will look to keep the momentum going into a challenging three-game week that begins with a big game on Wednesday night in Wheatley.
