The Amherstburg Admirals split their two games this past week, dropping a tight game on Wednesday in Wheatley and then picking up their first win of the season the following night in Walpole Island.
On Wednesday night in Wheatley, the Admirals got off to their best start of the young season, scoring 10 seconds apart early in the first period to take a 2-0 lead. The Sharks however would respond in the second half of the opening frame to put the score at 2-2 through 20 minutes of play.
After Layne Crispin scored to put the Admirals back in front, the turning point of the game came when Sharks captain Braeden Caetano scored a shorthanded goal with 10 seconds left in the second. That equalizer prevented the Admirals from taking a lead into the third period and kept the momentum level, until Kyle Bleau notched the game-winner just under two minutes remaining in regulation. Wheatley added an empty-netter and left the ice with the victory and two points. Braeden Armstrong and Jake Archer were the other Admiral goal-scorers, while Josh Courtney was outstanding in net making 38 saves.
A short memory was then needed after the hard-fought defeat, as the team made their first bus trip of the year to Walpole Island to take on the Wild for the second time in September. Hoping to return the favour from the opening-night loss, Jake Archer’s second of the game broke a 1-1 score eary in the second period and stood to be the game-winning goal in a 3-1 Admirals victory. Layne Crispin added the important insurance goal just 13 seconds after Archer’s power-play tally to close out the second period scoring. There was no further scoring in the third and Joe Costea shut the door on a 35-save outing to record his first career win.
The Admirals will now look to build on their improved play over the last two games and carry that momentum into two more road games this week. On Thursday they will travel to Blenheim to take on the Blades and then they will be back on the bus for a Saturday night tilt against the Mooretown Flags.
