Admirals Blank Wild, Split Weekend Games

The Amherstburg Admirals returned to the win column by blanking the Walpole Island Wild on Saturday night in Amherstburg.

Turning in their most complete game of the season, the Admirals scored three times in a four-minute span of the first period and dominated the play throughout the evening. Charlie Coristine, Connor Demelo and Stefan Jacobs all recorded one goal and one assist in the game, while Joe Costea had just 18 shots sent his way and stopped them all to pick up his first career shutout. Coristine’s shorthanded goal late in the first period was of the highlight-reel variety that saw him strip the puck off a Wild player, and then deke around a couple defenders and the goaltender. The 18-year-old forward has provided a key offensive spark, registering three goals and six points in five games since being acquired from the Wheatley Sharks.

The previous night, the Admirals dropped a back and forth affair on the road in Dresden. Dallas Kelly tied the game at 3-3 with just over seven minutes left in the third, but the Kings scored their third power-play goal of the game two minutes later with what turned out to be the game-winning goal. An empty-net goal rounded out the scoring in a 5-3 Dresden win. Penalties were the Admirals undoing as they were the better team at even strength for much of the game. Braeden Armstrong and Jaxon Boucher scored the other Amherstburg goals.

The Admirals will look to return the favour when they play host to the Kings this coming Saturday. Game-time at the Libro Centre is set for 7:30 PM.
