The Amherstburg Admirals shook off a tough OT loss and turned in arguably their best game of the season to regain the series lead against the Wheatley Sharks with a 5-1 victory on Sunday night in Wheatley.
In Game 2 on Saturday, Sharks forward Vito Alfano scored at 6:47 of overtime to give his team a 3-2 victory to even the best-of-seven quarterfinal series at 1-1. The game featured its share of controversy, including the Admirals having the potential winning goal waived off late in the third on a play that was deemed a high-stick. Darby Drouillard and Drew Booker scored Amherstburg’s goals in defeat.
Back in Wheatley for Game 3 on Sudnay night, the teams were faced with a quck turnaround and it was the Admirals who seemed to be the team with the livelier legs. Rory Sandison scored the lone goal of the opening frame and then two second period goals from Ryan Clark and Charlie Coristine off-set a Colm Smith tally for Wheatley to give the visitors a two-goal advantage through 40 minutes. Hometown boy Cole Vaillancourt extended the lead to three at 8:37 of the third period and Dallas Kelly put the nail in the coffin with his first of the playoffs just over a minute later.
Ryan Clark led the way with a goal and two assists, while Dallas Kelly, Rory Sandison and Chrlie Coristine each had a goal and an assist. Russell Vaughan, making his first start of the series looked sharp throughout, making 37 stops in total for his first career playoff win.
Holding a 2-1 lead in the series, the Admirals will now get another crack at defending home ice with Game 4 coming on Tuesday night at the Libro Centre in Amherstburg. Game-time is set for 7:30 PM.
